- Seen by south Africans as a terrorist organization, seen by the world as protestors, now seen as heroes
- Leaders were often jailed
- Wanted to create a non-racial democracy
- The National Party portrayed the ANC as a Communist organization
- Links to USSR, this would make the alliance with the rest of the world (USA) fall apart
- “The Soviet Union did provide education and military training, but were never really interested in S.A.”
