After that, Nixon visited china to begin trade negotiations. In 1976 Mao died. Chairman Hua took over and wanted to put less emphasis on heavy industry and he wanted to pay workers for work they had done. He laid the groundwork for the return of capitalism in china that was finished by Deng in the 1980s.
