In 1948 an all white National Party came to power. This brought in apartheid, which was their main agenda. This brought white supremacy which meant blacks could not marry outside their own race, choose where to live or travel where they pleased. The African National Congress was created to resist the Apartheid and their leaders were often put in jail. They wanted a non racial democracy. Nelson Mandela became the leader of that party. He was arrested in 1964 and put there for life. He became a symbol of the resistance/revolution. The UN condemned the apartheid system in 1952.

What were the steps that Gandhi used in order to help India secure independence from Great Britain?
Ghandi was the leader of the Indian Congress Party. He believed in leading with a style of protest called pacifism which is non-violent resistance. To protest the British who put a tax on salt Gandhi walked to the ocean (240 miles) and many people followed him. The march went from march 12 to april 6th. Ghandi was arrested because of this. Whenever Ghandi was put into prison he went on a hunger strike and refused to eat. This helped him out because everyone new that once he died he would become an icon/martyr of the revolution and people would go crazy and rebel even more and not in a peaceful manner. Ghandi also practiced civil disobedience which means he simply refused to do what they were asking him to do but he never did it with violence. With all of this the British ended their involvement in India in 1947.
