The Aryan race and the Final Solution
- Idea laid out in Mein Kampf
- Aryan Race (blonde hair blue eyes) was superior
- Jews made out to be the universal scapegoats
- Originally jews were put in work camps
- July 1941 final solution= extermination of the Jewish race a priority (concentration camps/death camps)
- Carried out by Einsatzgruppen a special section of the S.S (made up of murders etc. because they wanted people who could already do it)
- Shooting and burying them was not fast enough
- Gas chambers became the popular method
- This was famous in Auschwitz (2 million alone)
The Holocaust
- Holocaust prior to WWII was a term that referred to a burnt offering or destruction by fire
- The first reports to the west came in Jan. of 1942 when the New York Times reported 100,000 Jews had been machine gunned in the Baltic States
- July 1944 Allied powers got their first eye witness accounts when the Soviets liberated a camp called Majdanek
- 1945 Auschwitz is discovered
- It is now believed up to 6 million Jews died during the Holocaust
- 6 million jews died during the Holocaust
Summary
Hitler was very anti-Semitic and made all jewish people register themselves as jews and they were made to wear the star of david everywhere. He also forced jews out of careers and homes, prohibited marriage between jews and non jewish germans and took away their citizenship. On November 9th, the night of Kristallnacht, thousands of Jewish shops and Synagogues were smashed and burned and many jews were imprisoned. Soon after Jews were put into work camps and then the work camps turned into death camps where Jews were killed in gas chambers. This later all became known as the Holocaust.
