Failures of the League of Nation
- USA doesn't join them
- Germany joins 1926 and leaves in 1933 because of Hitler
- Lack of enforcement (only economic sanctions)
- Too closely linked with the Treaty of Versailles and Hitler hates it
- Nationalism is too strong (big guys don't want little guys to tell them what to do)
Japanese Occupation of Manchuria 1931
- Japan owns South Manchurian railway
- Military operation in 1931 claiming Manchuria
- 1932- Leagues Lytton (sent in the league of nations to see if Japanese should be there), they decide Japanese shouldn't be there
- Japan quits the league and then the league of nations has no right to say anything and Japan invades northern China
- League decides this conflict has no effect on Europe- ignores situation
- Mussolini and Hitler see this and take it as a go!
Italian Occupation of Abyssinia (Ethiopia), 1935
- Italy had interest in colony since 1895
- Mussolini wanted to expand his empire (Imperialism)
- 1934 an incident is set up where Italians are killed so they can take this place over
- needed a reason to go in
The End of the League of Nations
- League does not respond- Italy invades
- Economic sanctions was threatened by League (said they would stop trading with them but there was still US, Germany, Japan atc.)
- Hoare-Laval plan- french and british said that if italy stopped fighting with ethiopia they would give them half their land
- Plan undermines the league
- People lose interest- Mussolini completes conquest
- Signals the end of the league of nations (still exists until 1945)
Summary
Many different acts of appeasement led to Hitler's reign. These included the Japanese Occupation in Manchuria, Italian Occupation in Ethiopia and the end of the league of nations. These all gave Hitler the idea that he could do what ever he wanted without any consequences because he saw it happen many times with these three examples.
