The Chinese Civil War
- Mao and the CCP liberated much of northern China from the Japanese by 1945
- During the second world war china had the most deaths (10 million deaths)
- The Japanese killed more civilians than the holocaust
- Chiang was supported by the U.S. because they do not want China to fall to communism (Domino Theory)
- The U.S. wanted to form a coalition between the two groups (George Marshall was heavily involved in makin sure the Americans chose the right side)
- Mao led a peasant army (in the millions)- People’s Liberation Army (PLA)
- 1947-1949
- Chiang and the Nationalists lost and fled to the Island of Formosa (Taiwan)
- Becomes Nationalist China
- The reason that McCarthyism started
Summary
Mao and his army liberated much of northern China from the Japanese. Even though Chiang was supported by the States he still fled to Taiwan because he was overpowered by Mao. The Civil war went through from 1947-49, and on october 1st Mao formed the People's republic of China.
